So after the initial idea to build an additional house, and our original concept plans which although fitted our criteria, was just not what we had in mind, I used my limited skills on Google Sketchup to see what ideas I could come up with. It’s a useful and intuitive tool that has assisted me in visualising the building.
Sketchup is a great tool and the basic version is free. Take a look here
I soon learned that my limited design skills were dictating what was being designed, so although it was limited in its results, it assisted in understanding the likely visual impact of the house. Importantly this includes the impact on our existing house, and the adjoining neighbours, including the houses above where their views are precious and if we have any chance of not upsetting them by the build, we had better not block their views! We have really considered the impact on others and think that the impact of the house will be minimal on the neighbours. Our primary aims are to limit the effect of anyone’s views, create parking (although not a Planning requirement at the moment).
Here’s the result of my Google Sketchup efforts. In addition to the original concept drawings, some original ideas are crystallising. It will be interesting to see how these original plans compare with what’s built.
Here's an example of what can be done - With a whole lot more skill than me!
